LITTLE MARLOW SCHOOL
December 2008
Being small means that we all know each other really well, we care about each other
and we get the chance to do lots of things together. Here are some of the things
we’ve done together since September. First of all we all helped to make two harvest
loaves for our special harvest assembly held at the Church. After that assembly we
came back to school to share our bread and we all had a piece to eat. Early in
October we met at Spade Oak at 900am and walked back to school together along the
river as part of Walk to School’ month, Just before half term we all tried to bring
in something to fill shoe boxes to send to Romania and in mid November we brought in
our coins to make long lines on the Green Room floor as our way of collecting for
‘Children in Need’. Earlier in the same week we’d stood together on the playground to
share in the national silence, to show respect and to remember those who’d died.
However, our greatest chance of doing things together this term is at the Christmas
Nativity. Everybody takes part, even our ‘mornings only’ children have
the chance to dress up and climb on to the stage at some point in the production. The
older children have more to do and many have something to say as well. The key parts
go to the Year 2 pupils and they always rise to the occasion; it’s something they
expect to do and they look forward to it, This year we’ve chosen a basic version of
the age-old story, called quite simply ‘The Nativity’, with plenty of singing for us
all. The art of learning songs by heart relies heavily on the CD being played almost
non-stop to ensure we almost live and breathe the words. If parents don’t yet know
the words, then they soon will! The production will be performed on 8th and 9th
December at 600pm in Little Marlow Church. Do come and join us if you can — there’s
nothing quite like a simple infant Nativity to bring home the message of Christmas
and no venue more suitable either.
On behalf of all of us at Little Marlow School, may I wish everyone a truly wonderful
Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

When I remember my own Primary School days back in the Forties and Fifties, they were happy but there were very few highlights or deviations from the 3Rs.
Each term followed the next with nothing to distinguish it from the previous one.
The only trip I remember was a day trip to London when I was 11, the farthest south I had ever been in those days.
Nowadays even my young 5 year olds have probably had a trip to Disneyland or had several trips on a plane and seen countries I have yet to visit.
At school each term has some exciting new experiences-this term alone there have been trips to Cogges Manor Farm, Hampton Court and the National Gallery.
We have had visits by a Drama Expert and professional musicians and on Friday 5th the children enjoyed a "Sausage Sizzle" organised by the PTA.
They can then look forward to the annual Christmas Fair on Nov.27th (12 noon till 3.00 pm-everyone welcome!) and finally this term, all the fun and excitement of our Christmas plays and parties
Over the years I have shared similar events at Claytons. I have loved watching the faces of the children as they see or learn something new, the happiness they can find in simple things like planting a bean and watching it grow and their pride in earning a star. sticker or House Point for work well done.
If I appear nostalgic it is because, after 34 years in teaching, I am retiring and looking forward to a bit of a rest.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Bourne End Schools, having taught in the village for 31 years, and will greatly miss the children, Staff and parents.
A new Deputy Head has been appointed, Claire Garnett, who has just moved into Bourne End and I hope she will be as happy as I have been.
I am not moving away from Bourne End so hope to keep in touch with Claytons and Little Marlow and all my friends here.
